The Amazon region is more than ever the focus of global attention. Extreme droughts, an increase in wildfires, and the ongoing exploitation of natural resources such as timber, gas, oil, and gold are having serious impacts on the region’s ecosystems and the habitats of indigenous communities. Against this backdrop, the latter are stepping up their local monitoring and surveillance practices, collaborating with civil society and government actors and adopting new technologies. Companies in the extractive sector are also increasingly being obligated to have their activities monitored transparently—in cooperation with indigenous communities.
This evening, we welcome four indigenous environmental guardians who have years of experience in environmental monitoring. They will share their perspectives with the audience.
